Chairmen, LG Service Commission, Meet In Port Harcourt

The first all local government council chairmen meeting with the local government service commission ended in Port Harcourt on Tuesday April 3, 2012.
It was a close door meeting centred on discussion of predicaments the chairmen pass through in their various councils.
Addressing newsmen, the chairman of the commission, Hon. Azubuike Mmerikini, said there were different complains like workers’ absence from work, reporting to duty late and others, by the chairmen.
He said it was peculiar that some people who are due for retirement either by age or by years in service, forge documents to remain in service thereby blocking ways for new hands to come in.
Nmerikini who is an experienced council administrator added that they have a committee on board that will soon go about to x-ray things in the grassroots and that when the committee comes into full force they will uncover all the hidden irregularities like ghost workers, and some holding double appointments working in the council and some other place.
He assured that when these are shown their way out there will be employment as they cannot employ now when the place is still saturated.
He said after this they would train staff as some of them do not know what to do. He complained of financial constraints especially now that the 1% promised the commission is not yet out, pointing out that they have several programmes to embark upon that needed fund.
However the former mayor assured they would not stop but go ahead, and appreciated the timely response of the chairmen to the meeting. ###
