Port Harcourt side Dolphins of Nigeria on Sunday managed a narrow win of 2-1 over their international CAF opponent, Conton Sport Garoua in the first leg played at Port Harcourt. The second leg will be played at Cameroon when Dolphins will be guest to Conton Sport Garoua.
Dolphins scored their first goal at the second minute of play in the first half through ravaging Ifeanyi Egwin, while Hamam scored Conton Sport Garoua only goal in the 15th minutes into play in the first half.
The second half resumed with the Port Harcourt Side being business like and was rewarded with penalty at the 70th minute only to be wasted by Dolphins goal scorer, Ifeanyi Egwim. Dolphins continued to waste more scoring chances till at the dying minute of the game, just few minutes to the end of the game when Ghanaian Dolphins import Owusu Addae carefully slot in the ball into the net of Conton Sport Garoua after collecting a pass from his partner from the right out wing.
Speaking to Sports journalists shortly after the match, reactions of different shades from both stakeholders and fans of Dolphins had it that Dolphins played the way they did because they have not trained for the match.
Reasons being that the state government had not paid Dolphin players their salaries and allowance of 8 months. In other words, the players were not motivated.
In another development taxi driver increased their transport fares anytime Dolphins or any serious activity is going on in Elekahia liberation stadium. This action is only capable of thwarting the efforts of the commissioner of Sports, Rivers State who had mobilized residents of Port Harcourt and its environs to support Dolphins to victory.
The Newswriter Sport desk learnt that many went back because of the high transport fare inflated against the people. This is not good at all.
The commissioner for Sports and Transport should as a matter of urgency put a stop to this ugly trend if they want Dolphins to be really supported by fans and football followers to victory in their home matches. ###
