The Igbo race has been admonished once again on the need for peaceful co-existence in the country.
The Divisional Police Officer, Oyigbo, Mr. Nath Okpara gave the advice as the special guest of honour during the inauguration of the Igbo Council of Chiefs, Oyigho chapter recently in the area.
He also used the opportunity to call on parents to put an eye on what their children/wards do and the company they keep as a way of helping the police in the security job.
The amiable police officer also advised the businessmen to engage themselves only on genuine businesses as the long arm of the law would surely catch up with the fraudulent ones or people of dubious character.
According to the DPO, “the ubiquitous Igbo race are unique in many ways and needs only a little encouragement to bring out the best in them”, urging them to endeavour to be their brother’s keepers and as well co-exist peacefully with their hosts brother’s keepers and as well co-exist peacefully with their hosts.
In his speech shortly before inaugurating the Council of Chiefs in his palace, HRH Eze (Sir) R. O. Ekegbu advised the elected officers and the entire house to work assiduously for Ndigbo, urging them to avoid the pitfalls of their predecessors.
He also appealed to the officers in particular to always live a life worthy of emulation and endeavour to leave a legacy.
Eze Ekegbu equally used the opportunity to appeal for special consideration from the DPO in course of their duties, while thanking him for what he called the DPO’s gallantry in combating crime in Oyigbo metropolis.
In his welcome address, the chairman of the council of chiefs, Chief (Sir) Festus Onukwufor (JP) noted that the Igbo race is known for their resilience and acting in unison over noble ventures, soliciting for the support of all for them to succeed. over noble ventures, soliciting for the support of all for them to succeed.
He charged them, “let us take advantage of the abundant skills in this council and immense goodwill of our kits and kins in Oyigbo to move this council to a new level,” adding that they were going to draw their strength from their predecessors achievements to improve on existing institutional weakness.
Highlight of the event was the observance of one minute silence over the demise of Eze Igbo Gburugburu, late Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, as well as the administration of oath of office to the elected officers by Eze Eziokwu bu ndu, Richard O. Ekegbu.
Those elected were Chief (Sir) Festus Onukwufor Chairman, Chief (Sir) Kyrian Onyeji, Vice chairman, Chief (Hon.) Peter E. E. Onwumelu, Secretary, and Chief (Apostle) Emmanuel Ekeh, Fin. Sec.
Others were Chief Moris Iwuajoku, Asst. Secretary, Chief Livinus Anyadiegwu, Treasurer, Chief Obi Abiahu, Welfare Officer, Nze Patrick N. Okoroigwe PRO and Chief Abatanze M. Ibuakaeze, Provost.
