Dolphins of Port Harcourt football club, sponsored by the Rivers State Government along side with sister club, Sharks of Port Harcourt, made their triumphant entry to Port Harcourt, being crowned the premier league of Nigeria new champions after beating Bokula Babes in the league’s final champion deciding game in week 38.
The nation’s new premier league champions arrived Port Harcourt with a glorious float around the streets of Port Harcourt and made their final destination for reception, which was original billed to be at the Government House, but at the eleven hour was changed to the liberation stadium.
As expected, lovers of football and fans of Dolphins wasted no time to follow the new change of venue by shifting attention to the liberation stadium to welcome their beloved new champion of Nigerian premier league. It was a crowd of well-meaning footballers, fans, supporters, government officials and the entire public that has interest in football, waiting for the state governor to welcome and receive the trophy they have won for the state.
It was sad to note, that the Governor was not properly informed of receiving the Nigerian premier league champions, as it was not in the governor’s schedule. He disclosed this on arrival later that day, being weekend, Friday, November 8, 2011.
Before the governor’s late arrival to receive the nation’s local league new champions, the victorious lads were left hanging around the stadium alongside fans and supporters of the club for hours, like children looking for their mother after being given a valuable asset from abroad to show to their mother.
The Newswriter sports desk gathered that the arrangement of receiving Dolphins was not properly arranged by the authority concerned.
The State Governor who was on another assignment made last minute decision to arrive the stadium to avoid shame and embarrassment the situation would bring to the state.
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, being a frank man, disclosed how he was not informed about Dolphins reception that day, but made efforts to receive the trophy from the team, to save them from embarrassment as well as to lift the spirit of the victorious lads.
He made his unexpected pronouncement by saying the team would be received properly next week. No cash or gift was mentioned.
With that done, every soul that went for the reception ceremony at the Liberation Stadium, who had spent the whole day to demonstrate their love for the Dolphins, departed to their various destinations by almost 7pm. ###
